Body Dysmorphic Disorder - Do You Look Good Enough?

Body dysmorphic disorder is a serious and sometimes deadly type of depression. The causes of body dysmorphic disorder are not completely understood, but the important issue around the disorder is getting the person suffering from the disease the proper bbd treatment.

What Is Body Dysmorphic Disorder?

What is BBD? BBD, or Body Dysmorphic Disorder is a psychological disease where the sick person thinks that he or she is fat or ugly, no matter what the reality about their body might be. They might loose a significant amount of weight, and in other's eyes, they might look just fine, but they see a fat, ugly person whenever they look in the mirror.

People with a history of body dysmorphic disorder do not always struggle with a weight image. There are other forms of the disorder where the person might hate other aspects of their appearance. The factor that makes it BDD is that the person is so obsessed with their appearance that they have a completely distorted view of how they look, and even if they improve their appearance, they do not see the improvements when looking in the mirror.

Other Complications Arising From BDD

Those who suffer from this serious problem often have other psychological disorders. Usually, people with a history of body dysmorphic disorder also have some form of eating disorder, such as bulimia or anorexia. Eating disorders can lead to a variety of physical problems as well.

Signs and Symptoms of the Disorder

A person who has body dysmorphic disorder is going to have an above average obsession with checking the mirror to see their reflection. In fact, those suffering from the disorder will check their appearance any chance they get, including when passing windows.

The opposite problem might also occur. The person with the disorder might avoid looking in the mirror, and even be unable to look at their own appearance. Continually touching the area of the body that they feel is defective. Included in this symptom, the person might pick at the skin in the perceived defective area.

A person suffering from BDD will spend much time looking at others and commenting on their physical appearance, often comparing it to their own. A person with teen body dysmorphic disorder will often choose a celebrity to try to model their appearance after. They feel that this particular celebrity has the perfect appearance, thus being the most desirable appearance. Because the person is unable to control their obsessive behavior, it is very similar to obsessive-compulsive disorder, simply revolving around the person's weight or appearance.
