Medications For Treating Depression

Medications are given when the person in not been able to cope up with the trauma. Serious mental depression can lead to impulsive behavior of the patient, he might be too disturbed and confused to go for counseling or react to it. These are the times when medication is given to the patient. Anti-stress medicines are fast and effective. Few medicines that are given as an anti depression medicine are as follows
Serotonin
One of the primary medicines to treat anti depression is very effective on people with depression. The serotoninergic system regulates mood, emotion, sleep, appetite, and controls psychological and physiological behavior of the patient. The main function of Serotonin medicine is that it plays a vital part in the nervous system and plays an important part in many disorders.
Tricyclics
This medication helps in many psychological disorders like anxiety and depression. The medicines are highly effective if given in proper doses, tricyclic antidepressants raise the amount of chemical messengers in the brain. This helps in correcting the activity of these messengers and finally helps to improve mood. The medicine can take from few weeks to month to have the proper effect depending on the age of the patient. These medicines are non-addictive and hence it is safe to take, though leaving it can have mild discontinuation effect for short time.

Other anti depressive medicine used to treat depression are Nardil (phenelzine), Parnate (tranylcypromine), Buspar (buspirone), Cymbalta (duloxetine), Desyrel (trazodone), Effexor (venlafaxine). All these medicines are effective to treat depression though some of these medicines have side effects like nausea, seizure and vomiting.
Electroconvulsive Therapy
ECT is given under severe conditions of insomnia, depression, compulsive behavior and schizophrenia, homicide or suicide. Often this therapy is used when the person does not respond to medication. ECT is given in the form of electric shocks to create an irregular brain activity. The activity releases chemical in brain called neurotransmitters that helps in better working of the brain. Before this treatment is given it is very important for the doctor to be a specialist, he should do proper case study of the patient and should examine the person carefully. Anesthesia is given to the person before the treatment is done. After the sleepy effect of Anesthesia the electric shock is given brain, which lasts for a second or two and after that the patient is observed for some time before discharged from it.

Herbal Treatment

Natural remedies are gaining popularity, as they are safe and effective. Herbs have natural substances in them, which relax nerves, and muscles and releases stress from the person. Herbs like Hyperforin has anti depressant substance, which has high potential to treat depression. Few herbs that have proved to be effective in depression are:

These alternative practices make one more aware and conscious and motivates them to change their attitude. It imbibes positive thoughts and energy to the people practicing it and keeps depression at bay. Depression treatment method may vary from medicine to meditation but the end result is the same, to heal anxiety and depression.
