The scientific name for the plant from which St. John's Wort oil is extracted from hypericum perforatum. Also known as Klamath weed or goat weed, this plant, commonly called just St. John's Wort, is a European perennial herb with serrated or perforated leaves. It has been introduced successfully to the America's where it grows wild in fields and meadows.

The common name for the herb derives from the fact that the plant normally flowers and is ready for harvesting by St. John's Day, June 24th. St. John's Wort can grow to a height of one to three feet. The flowers, which are a vibrant yellow, typically have five petals with three central bunches of long stamens joined at the base. For those interested in adding St. John's Wort to their herb garden, it is a hardy plant that thrives on neglect.

Will St. John's Wort Treat Depression?

Although used since the days of the ancient Greeks as an anti-inflammatory, astringent, and antiseptic, the modern usage differs for St. John's Wort. Anxiety and depression are the major indications for use of this herb today, which has been shown to be an effective relief in mild to moderate cases of each psychological problem.

Many people are able to successfully fight depression with hypericum perforatum and in so doing to avoid the use of prescription anti-depressants and their side effects. In many parts of Europe (particularly in Germany) standardized extractions of St. John's Wort are prescribed more often by doctors for depression than their pharmaceutical counterparts.

All antidepressants work by either inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin in the brain or by regulating monoamine oxidase in the body. While St. John's Wort is also believed to inhibit the reuptake of serotonin, it does so without potential addiction, a real problem with many popular antidepressants like Prozac. Also, there have been instances of reported nerve damage in people who suddenly stop taking Prozac. Such damage does not occur with St. John's Wort.

What Forms of St. John's Wort Are Available?

Recommended St. John's Wort dosage varies by formulation and type, but in clinical trials to test the efficacy of the herb amounts of 300 to 1800mg daily have been used. For the dried form of the herb, which is often brewed as a tea, the British Herbal Medicine Association's Scientific Committee recommended two to four cups daily.

In liquid extract form, the recommended dosage of St. John's Wort was 2-4ml. Since potency of the herb can vary greatly from one brand to the next, pick a brand and stay with it. Almost all major herbal companies like Nature's Way offer a St. John's Wort product. Go with a well-known and reputable name and you should receive a good quality herbal formulation.

St. John's Wort is readily available as capsules that contain either the dried herb as a powder or St. John's Wort oil. Due to variations in formulation, start with a small dosage, perhaps 100mg twice a day and increase as needed. (Although not as widely used, St. John's Wort can also be obtained as an ointment or cream.)
