How Is GAD Treatment Performed

Although there is no specific generalized anxiety disorder cure, a combination of medication and cognitive-behavioral therapy has proven effective in giving the sufferer some relief from their unrelenting symptoms. It is too optimistic to say curing generalized anxiety disorder is possible. Treatment is more an issue of management and control.

The favored generalized anxiety disorder medication is some form of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). These popular antidepressants include Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa, and Lexapro. Occasionally as emergency measures benzodiazepines like Valium or Xanax will be used to treat severe attacks but they are not appropriate for long-term use because they are addictive.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy as GAD treatment is an attempt to get the individual to both confront their fears and to recognize the unrealistic aspects of their anxiety. Normally calming techniques are learned and social and interpersonal skills are honed. GAD sufferers spend so much time trying to manage their environment, they often get on poorly with other people.

If GAD is an hereditary condition the individual may always feel the pull of those worries and fears. Without question it is good advice for anyone seeking to minimize stress in their lives to eat properly, get enough rest, and exercise. For a person in danger of experiencing an outbreak of generalized anxiety disorder these things are critical.

Therapists will also speak of the importance of maintaining a healthy perspective on life. This is oftentimes easier said than done. Having something in your life that gets you "out of yourself" is always a good idea. This can be a hobby or craft, a sport or outdoor activity, or a consuming passion such as playing a musical instrument or an artistic endeavor. Dwelling on and extrapolating the importance of any problem or worry is not constructive and should be avoided at all costs.

When should You Seek Medical Advice?

The degree of shame that sufferers of generalized anxiety disorder feel works against them. There are individuals who live their entire lives with the pain of this condition and never seek help. When generalized anxiety disorder is negatively impacting your relationships with others and with your ability to support yourself in the workplace, seek help.Life is not supposed to be lived in a constant state of anxiety and agitation nor is it meant to be orchestrated around elaborate rituals and habits.

Generalized anxiety disorder symptoms are clearly recognizable. Any individual with the condition will instantly recognize themselves in a description of GAD. It is possible to get generalized anxiety disorder treatment and while curing the condition may not be possible, managing GAD is certainly possible.
