Person suffering from depression faces a traumatic period, this affects his work, family and social life. It becomes difficult for him to relate to his environment. Psychotherapy involves various techniques to treat depression. Psychotherapy for depression may vary from 2-3 weeks to twenty weeks. The main technique of the therapy is counseling which has become synonym to psychotherapy. Psychotherapy involves not just the client but also the family, it is more involved with person and family. The techniques so involved can be:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

This therapy (CBT) involves the treatment of depression, anxiety and any sort of mental illness.Cognitive therapy is based on how thought processes work, depressed people are more inclined towards negative thought. They have a feeling of failure in them and therapists try to change the thought process towards the positive side. It is very important for the therapist to be patient while listening to the patients. Reports and data suggest that this therapy is very effective and people who take it have minimal chances of relapse.

Interpersonal therapy(IPT)

This therapy is a short term therapy and mostly restricted to 15-20 sessions. Each session lasts for about an hour. The main approach to this therapy is around the root problem of depression. It is very helpful for a person to come out of the traumatic relationship or interpersonal events.

Others Psychotherapy Treatment

Psychodynamic therapy and group therapy are two different techniques for treating depression. They involve trauma or conflicts at childhood and though considered short term the procedure takes time. In group therapy people suffering from similar trauma get a chance to interact with each other and often it proves to be very effective or share the experience and ways to handle it.
