It would be handy if therapists wore specific nametags - "anxiety psychotherapist" or "social anxiety therapist." Unfortunately "Dr." may be about as much as you get in trying to assess the person to whom you turn for anxiety and depression treatment. And if the person you are considering is a one of a group of licensed clinical social workers, you won't even get that.

Talk therapy is a process intended to provide insight into personal problems and to develop new coping methods. The individual should not only experience a lessening of their disturbing symptoms, but should also come away having learned more about themselves, the events of their lives, and their reactions to those events. Talk therapy won't work if you don't feel free to talk to your therapist.

Aren't All Counselors Therapists?

Increasingly the terms "counseling" and "psychotherapy" are used interchangeably but the words do not necessarily represent the same process nor are they conducted by the same kind of professional. Phrases like "anxiety psychotherapist" can be confusing and misleading. At the heart of the issue is a basic difference in approach and professional abilities.

Counseling refers to a listening-based approach. The counselor will draw out the individual to talk and to fully explore the issue of concern to them and may themselves have little to say until the end of the session. Social workers and other people outside the medical profession are trained counselors and can be a wonderful source of support and help.

A medically trained psychotherapist or a clinical psychologist will be more participatory in therapy sessions, often confronting and challenging what the individual is saying or asserting. Unlike counselors, psychotherapist with medical training can prescribe medications and oversee an individual's stay in a mental health institution.

It is certainly not unusual for distressed individuals to seek faith-based counseling from a priest or minister. While spiritual grounding and comfort is essential to any healing process, remember that religious advice will be based on a set of given beliefs and principles that can make you feel worse about certain behaviors or a lifestyle choice. Unfortunately religious counseling often involves guilt or blame. The person who is already anxious or depressed simply does not need those burdens.

Further more, it is important to get over the idea that seeking help or working with a counselor of any sort is an embarrassment, a dirty little secret to be hidden because it carries a social stigma. Modern life is often frightening and confusing. We are bombarded with stress and worry from every angle. These factors can negatively affect not just our personal lives but our ability to hold down a job and to make a living. We all need help at times and there is no shame attached to that fact.
