Anti anxiety medications should be used under the supervision of a medical practitioner and they are used to reduce some of the symptoms associated with anxiety. Anti anxiety drugs and its uses generally work by lowering activity of the brain so that the patient feels less anxious. The side effects as a result of this reduction in brain activity include drowsiness and lethargy. These drugs have well anti anxiety property and can be used in severe cases of anxiety or even panic attacks as they are fast acting drugs and bring the patient to normal condition within a period of half an hour to one hour. The side effects that are associated with this class of anti anxiety medications are sluggishness, drowsiness, impaired judgement, blurred vision and slurry speech. As these drugs are metabolized slowly by the body, repeated use for long periods of time could lead to build up of the drug in the body causing over sedation.

In certain people administration of anti anxiety medications could result in increased excitement that could lead to excessive anger and aggressive behaviour. Such conditions might reach dangerous proportions of mania and heightened unruly behaviour. Though this paradoxical effect is seen only rarely, it has been found to affect only children, people who are developmentally disabled and senior adults.

Certain class of people are advised to stay away from anti anxiety medications because of the side effects that they produce. Elderly people or people over 65 years of age, when taking such medications are prone to falls as a result of the drowsiness and the reduced mental activity caused. This increases the risk of broken bones and other accidents. People who have been addicted to drugs or alcohol in the past should also avoid taking these anti anxiety medications as these medications are highly habit forming or addictive and such people could become would become easily addicted to these drugs and will not be able to stay without it. Anti anxiety medications should be completely avoided by pregnant and lactating mothers as these drugs pass through the placenta and result in the baby getting used to these drugs. Such babies exhibit withdrawal symptoms once they are born.

There are many herbal formulations for anti anxiety medications that can be used to lower anxiety in people dealing with day to day stress. These medications can be used to reduce mood swings and other every day stress like nervousness etc. As these natural anti anxiety medications are not approved by the FDA, these anti anxiety medications can be taken as a part of an anti anxiety program.

One of the biggest side effects of anti anxiety medication is that they make one sleepy. Non drowsy anti anxiety medications are also available and these include Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI), Beta blockers and 5-hydroxytryptophan. SSRI during initial use causes drowsiness, however after a few days of recommended usage there will be no drowsiness. Beta blockers prevent stress cardiomyopathy and are commonly used anti anxiety prescription medications that do not cause drowsiness in small amounts.

Certain situations like embarrassment, fever, medications and even alcohol consumption results in a hot feeling and redness of the skin generally n the face and neck. Xanax (aprazolam) is an anti anxiety medication for flushing and has been found to control it.

Dogs become agitated and tense during certain situations like a raging thunder storm or in the event of loud noises and commotion. Canine anti anxiety medications are available to calm dogs and to keep them from getting tense. Fluoxetine and clomipramine is commonly used canine anti anxiety medications.
