Treating anxiety with hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy has long been recognised as a means of inducing the person into a state of hypnosis or a sleep state. A person in this state is susceptible to suggestions and he/she offers little resistance. Hypnotherapy has therefore been used to alter emotional behaviour and attitude of people to the benefit of the person who undergoes hypnotherapy.

The traditional form of hypnotherapy had a more direct approach to helping a person handle emotions, with hypnotherapy used to make the person alter his ways through suggesting the same directly to the person when in a state of hypnosis. This therapy has also been used to induce a relaxed state of mind and to encourage the person to avoid substance or alcohol abuse. Though the method of hypnotherapy has evolved over the years, the essence of the hypnotherapy that was used traditionally remains the same in many new forms that have been designed.

Anxiety is an emotional state that has been found to affect one's normal activity in extreme situations and should therefore be treated to restore a person's peace of mind. Hypnotherapy has been found to be very effective in controlling anxiety and providing relief. Anxiety hypnotherapy is a treatment process that is provided by many specially trained therapists who understand the condition and have the required expertise to ensure best support.

Hypnotherapy is used for anxiety as many emotional feelings are vented out from the subconscious mind and in order to deal with these emotions, it is necessary to reach into the subconscious mind and promote well being. Under normal circumstances modifying the emotions that are in the subconscious state is not possible and so hypnotherapy is used to induce a state of sleep where the subconscious mind is brought alive. The person who undergoes hypnotherapy for anxiety is fully aware about his whereabouts and what is happening around him/her. This is in complete contradiction to the general notion of hypnotherapy wherein the person is expected to be completely unaware about his surroundings. The person undergoing hypnotherapy can opt to leave the therapy session whenever he/she wants. The person moves into a complete state of physical and mental relaxation that is used to enact situations that bring about anxiety. Modifications in the emotional reaction to such situations are then gently brought about by the therapist. The process is repeated many times to ensure that the reaction is retained and that it becomes the normal mode of behaviour.

Generally prior to start of hypnotherapy to cure anxiety, a general relaxation technique is taught. This would allow the mind and body to relax so that the person will be better prepared for hypnotherapy. Anxiety hypnotherapy requires the person to be in a calm state so that hypnosis can be performed and the relaxed state of mind is more conducive to hypnotherapy. Once the person relaxes, anxiety hypnotherapy is started and self hypnosis taught to make the person relax further.

Repeated sessions are required to cure anxiety using hypnotherapy and after each session the patient is expected to relax a lot more. Challenging situations that are faced during the day and which are the causes for anxiety are consciously thought of and hypnotherapy used to calm one's senses with focus extended on relaxing oneself.

When anxiety is caused due to a particular event that may have taken place in the past, anxiety hypnotherapy involves re-enacting the situation many times to help the patient vent out emotions that have been controlled. Certain other anxiety disorders that arise as a result of self doubt involve the use of anxiety hypnotherapy that is used to improve the self confidence of the individual.

Anxiety hypnotherapy has also been shown to find the cause behind anxiety and panic attacks that are caused in people. Those who do not understand the reason behind their panic attacks can use the expertise of trained hynotherapists to unravel the cause. When the cause has been identified, therapy can be used to greatly change the anxiety levels of the individual. This will also lead to a better understanding of the situation and warrant better treatment.

In order for the anxiety hypnotherapy to work for a particular person who suffers from anxiety, the person should relax before the therapy session begins, as relaxation is vital for hypnotherapy to prove fruitful. It is difficult to go into a state of hypnosis with an agitated mind and so staying calm is the best option. Therapists offer techniques on relaxation that can be used to compose oneself and get ready for hypnotherapy. Situations where patients have pretended about entering the hypnotic state when they have been too agitated to do so, its been reported that the patient either being too shy to state that they have not entered the state of hypnosis or do not want to look stupid in front of the therapist.

Hypnotherapy can be used effectively for anxiety attacks and there are many therapists who provide hypnotherapy for anxiety. Anxiety treated with hypnotherapy will show improvements after a few sessions and continued counselling and support is provided through skype by certain therapists. This would allow continued help from the comfort of one's own home. Anxiety attacks have been shown to greatly reduce after hypnotherapy and so hypnotherapy is one of the most sought after therapies for anxiety.
